Summary:
The Veteran Service Dog Trainer at Big Dog Ranch Rescue will be responsible for the comprehensive care, training, and support of service dogs intended for veterans.
The role requires a strong background in dog training, with a focus on developing service dog skills to assist and support veterans in their daily lives.
Responsibilities:
Dog Training:
Implement specialized training programs for service dogs, including obedience, task-specific commands, and behavior modification.
Use Correct reinforcement methods to ensure the well-being and responsiveness of the service dogs.
Veteran Interaction:
Facilitate training sessions that involve veterans and their service dogs.
Provide guidance to veterans on handling and maintaining their service dogs' training.
Daily Care:
Oversee the daily care routine, including feeding, grooming, and medical check-ups for service dogs.
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kennel and training areas.
Task-Specific Training:
Train dogs for specific tasks related to the unique needs of veterans, such as mobility assistance, PTSD support, or other specialized tasks.
Regularly assess and adapt training plans based on the progress of individual dogs.
Record Keeping:
Maintain detailed records of each service dog's progress, health, and behavior.
Provide regular updates to the Training Director and other relevant staff.
Public Outreach:
Participate in public outreach programs to raise awareness about the role of service dogs for veterans.
Conduct informational sessions on responsible service dog ownership.
Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with the Training Director, veterinarians, and other staff to ensure the overall success of the service dog program.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of professional dog training experience, preferably with a focus on service dog training.
Familiarity with the unique training requirements for service dogs, especially those assisting veterans with physical or mental health challenges.
Compassion and Empathy:
Demonstrate a compassionate and understanding approach when working with both dogs and veterans.
Adaptability:
Ability to adapt training methods to suit the individual needs and capabilities of both dogs and veterans.
Communication Skills:
Excellent communication skills to effectively convey training instructions and information to veterans and other stakeholders.
PAY:
